Dance Workshops

Why is Dance Important?

Through St. Uriel’s Dance classes, students learn teamwork, focus, and improvisational skills. Dance awakens new perceptions in both children and adults, which help them learn and think in new ways. Dance is more than the exploring of different ways to make a shape or learning a series of steps to music; it is a way of moving that uses the body as an instrument of expression and communication.

Children need to express and communicate their ideas and to be given the opportunity to make creative decisions, even at a young age. This decision making promotes self-esteem and independent thinking for children. Learning the movement of others helps expand the child’s movement vocabulary while creating one’s own movement will put the child in a teaching role and give her the chance for her voice to be heard. Giving the students the freedom of making choices within a structure encourages them to reach beyond what comes easy to them and use their imagination, thus allowing them to test their own personal boundaries.

Dance also enables students to better understand themselves and the world in which they live. Through the arts, teachers can often teach children to recognize the contribution of all cultures to the fabric of our society and increase the understanding of diversity and values of all people. Dance lends itself well to this task through learning traditional dances and creating new ones based on children’s ideas. Dance also enhances skills of perception, observation, and concentration which will undoubtedly help students in all of their school subjects.

St. Uriel’s Dance classes

We offer the full range of dance classes including Jazz, Tap, Contemporary, Hip Hop and Acrobatics. We also offer local traditional dance curriculum namely Chinese, Malay and Indian dance. Upon request, we are able to choreograph dance items that blends the grace of our traditional dances with the passion of our young, to make dance even more fun and attuned to our students.

Singapore School Dance

We teach Dance as:

(1) part of the general aesthetics/music curriculum and

(2) CCA curriculum, and to prepare students to perform at school and community events.

For CCA dance groups or selected groups, student dancers will be able to perform at SYF, national dance competitions, school-exchanges with overseas schools.

Such deliverables are made possible because of our team of experienced, qualified and friendly instructors. These instructors have taught in numerous MOE schools, preparing school students for internal and external events. The instructors themselves have also performed at dance events, and some have been judges of dance competitions.

The dance workshops and lessons delivered by St Uriel Education Dancers are unique because we have experienced educators who support our dance instructors in following:

  1. Strategies to cultivate strong TSR (Teacher-Student-Relationship)
  2. Holistic education by teaching VALUES and Life Skills (aligned to the school or education centre)
  3. Pedagogically sound approach by subscribing to 1 MOE Singapore Teaching Practice framework
  4. Teaching practices adapted from 2 The Skillful Teacher.
