Quest 3 Gets Its First Sale and It’s Cheaper Than Buying Refurbished

By |July 12, 2024|

Quest 3 is on sale for the first time since its launch. It’s a decent discount that’s even cheaper than buying an officially refurbished headset from Meta.

Quest 3 is on sale on Amazon US right now for $430. That’s a savings of $70 (14%) off the MSRP. Surprisingly, it’s even cheaper than buying the headset officially refurbished by Meta, which is still priced at $450.

If Amazon runs out of the deal, we’ve also seen stock at Walmart and Target (but you have to make an account with Target to see the sale price).

Unfortunately, the Quest […]

Upcoming Arena Shooter ‘Frenzies’ Brings ‘Fracked’ Gunplay & Multiplayer Madness to Quest & PSVR 2

By |July 11, 2024|

Creating a great arena shooter is hard, as many VR developers can attest. Gaining critical mass is important to keeping the casual ‘jump-in, jump-out’ style gameplay quick and fresh, and mechanics need to be engaging if its going to be a VR-native game. Now nDreams-owned studio Near Light announced they’re doing just that with FRENZIES.

Developed by Near Light and published by nDreams, Frenzies fuses the studio’s gunplay from Fracked and Synapse, throwing players into five-round matches which promise to be a “chaotic lucky dip of iconic and unconventional.”

This includes solo and team-based round types, such as ‘Red Light, Green […]

‘Bounce Arcade’ is Like VR Pinball for Your Fists—And Exactly the Kind of Creativity VR Needs to Thrive

By |July 11, 2024|

Bounce Arcade, recently announced and launching this Fall, looks like a unique fusion of pinball and VR, in a way that’s truly native to the medium. It’s an example of the body of VR-native gameplay mechanics that’s still in its infancy.

All video games trace their lineage to arcade games.

I’m not necessarily talking about games in a big cabinet, but any game which has little in the way of narrative, characters, and progression. They’re primarily built around mechanics that are just plain-old fun.

With Pong (1972) we figured out how one axis of input could work. With Pac Man (1980) we added two […]

With Quest 2 Widely Sold Out, Meta Aims to Make Quest 3 Price More Palatable with 0% Financing

By |July 9, 2024|

We’re in a bit of a gulf now that Quest 2 is sold out and Meta is likely preparing to drop a new, cheaper device pretty soon to fill its shoes. To keep the headset sales chugging though, Meta announced it’s offering 0% financing on Quest 3.

Meta says eligible people in the US can finance a Quest 3 starting today at 0% APR through Affirm, which lets you pay $25 per month for a 128 GB headset, or $35 per month for the 512 GB model—both of which is paid over the […]

Pimax Crystal Super Update Shows Development Progress & New Slimmer Exterior

By |July 9, 2024|

Pimax announced that Crystal Super, its next high-resolution PC VR headset, is actually going to be a bit slimmer than originally planned, showing off a reduction in the headset’s exterior during a new update video.

Unveiled earlier this year alongside Crystal Light, the Crystal Super variant is a bit of a different beast, including the addition of eye-tracking, automatic interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment, and the ability to swap between two optional display modules and two optional lenses for varying pixel density and field-of-view (FOV).

While Crystal Super was ostensibly slated to be as big as the others […]

Lynx Shipping Additional R-1 Mixed Reality Headsets Soon, CEO Details “excruciating” Fundraising Environment

By |July 5, 2024|

French startup Lynx hasn’t had an easy time of getting headsets out the door, much less funding its small hardware startup, which is dedicated to producing its R-1 mixed reality standalone. There seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel though, as Lynx CEO Stan Larroque announced that a batch of R-1 headsets should be shipping out soon.

Larroque details the plan to distribute an additional 400 units between July and August in a recent Kickstarter update, noting that the units were assembled earlier but were delayed due to financial issues […]

Epic CEO Says “no plans currently” for ‘Fortnite’ on Quest, But Doesn’t Rule It Out Entirely

By |July 3, 2024|

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed the hit battle royale shooter Fortnite has “no plans currently” to come to Quest, although he hasn’t ruled it out entirely.

Here’s what Sweeney said in response to X user ‘TheoryDecrypt’:

No plans currently. For it to be successful we’d need a lot of players across all platforms spending a lot of their time on islands whose locomotion mechanics wouldn’t have VR players barfing. We’ve gone from 0 to 1 such popular mechanics but it’s not a critical mass yet.

— Tim Sweeney (@TimSweeneyEpic) June 30, 2024

It’s pretty clear by now Sweeney doesn’t think […]

Vision Pro Could Be Getting Controllers Soon from This Third-party Creator

By |July 3, 2024|

Vision Pro doesn’t have controllers, although that’s not stopping third-party hardware creators from trying to bypass Apple. Enter Surreal Touch, a newly announced motion controller that aims to leverage Vision Pro’s ability to play PC VR games, but not only.

Surreal Interactive, the startup behind Surreal Touch, is hoping to bring the controllers to market some point next month, with its price revealed at the time of launch.

Similar to Meta’s Touch Pro controllers, Surreal Touch contains optical sensors with fisheye lenses that allow the device to track independently from the headset.

‘Half-Life: Alyx’ on PSVR 2 Would be a Win-win-win for Valve, Sony, & Players

By |July 3, 2024|

There’s at least six really good reasons why getting Half-Life: Alyx onto PSVR 2 is a good idea, and it would be a net positive for everyone involved. So what do we gotta do to make it happen?

Despite launching in 2020, Half-Life: Alyx continues to be one of VR’s absolute best games. It’s production value and incredible attention to detail have allowed it to hold up extremely well, even four years later. But in PC VR land, pretty much everyone who has wanted to play the game probably already has. And hey, if you haven’t, you have no excuse […]
