With 24,000 students, Springfield Public Schools is usually among the three largest school districts in Massachusetts. Our students are spread across 31 elementary schools, two pre-K schools, and seven secondary schools. It’s no exaggeration to say that computational thinking plays a part in all of them. Prop Hunt-style VR Multiplayer ‘Mannequin’ Now in Open Alpha on Quest

By |February 21, 2024|

Fast Travel Games today launched the open alpha for Mannequin, its upcoming asymmetrical multiplayer VR game on Quest 2/3/Pro.

First revealed in September, Mannequin promises to bring a 2v3 experience akin to a deadly game of cat and mouse, letting two elite Agents hunt three shape-shifting aliens, aka Mannequins.

Somewhat like the ‘Prop Hunt’ mode from Gary’s Mod, the Mannequins have to blend into the scenery of frozen humans, but have the power to ambush Agents by dashing forward and freezing them in place with a single touch. On the flipside, Agents can scan for Mannequins and neutralize with their trusty EMP […]

Mozilla is Shutting Down Development on WebXR Social App ‘Hubs’

By |February 21, 2024|

Mozilla, the company behind the Firefox browser, shuttered most of its web-focused XR development back in 2020. At the time, the company’s web-based social VR app Hubs was spared from the chopping block. Now, after a new organization-wide restructuring, all development on Hubs is set to be wound down in May.

Launched in 2018, Hubs is an XR chatroom that runs directly in a browser, giving both VR headset users and standard monitor and smartphone users a place to connect. It’s an impressive ‘no-install-required’ WebXR social app that never gained the sort of traction that better-backed apps garnered over […]

Apple Confirms 1,000+ Vision Pro Native Apps Now Available

By |February 20, 2024|

Need a floating calculator on your living room wall? There’s an app for that. Well, actually there are now several apps for that on Vision Pro, as the company confirmed its first mixed reality headset is now packing over a thousand visionOS-native apps.

Apple’s SVP of Marketing Greg Joswiak posted on X (formerly Twitter) recently that the App Store now has 1,000+ apps designed for Vision Pro, a fair sight more than the 600 apps reported by the company right before the headset’s February 2nd launch.

A huge thank you to our developers! Their hard work has already resulted […]

‘Vi’ Wants You to Build Muscle with XR Gloves & (eventually) the Company’s Own Headset

By |February 19, 2024|

Using an XR headset for at-home workouts basically looks like playing Beat Saberyou can duck, dodge, punch or slice to improve cardio and burn fat. With an increasing number of apps that essentially play on that formula, XR startup Vi hopes to change things up by letting you build muscle as well with the help of its upcoming XR glove and, eventually, its own standalone XR headset too.

Founded by serial VR fitness entrepreneur Cix Liv, the new startup Vi (‘virtual eye’) announced late last week it’s building a glove you can wear while pumping iron, letting […]

‘Beat the Beats’ Brings Undoubtedly Cool Rhythm-Boxing to PSVR 2 This Month

By |February 17, 2024|

The VR rhythm genre is getting kind of crowded, with many developers looking to replicate Beat Saber’s ‘hit the thing to the beat’ money machine. Enter Beat the Beats, a project indeed inspired by Meta’s seminal block-slashing game, although with its own flair that really seems to set it apart from the competition.

The UK/Spain-based indie Parallel Circles announced Beat the Beats is set to launch on PSVR 2 this month, with version for Quest 2/3/Pro and SteamVR slated to arrive later this year.

We’ve already played the free demo on Steam, and it definitely proves to not only be […]

TikTok is the First Big Social Media Platform to Launch a Native Vision Pro App

By |February 16, 2024|

Vision Pro launched with over a million iOS apps earlier this month alongside a little over 600 native apps created specifically for visionOS. That number has grown steadily, although the biggest entrant lately is TikTok, the first social media giant to be available as a native app on Vision Pro.

TikTok parent company ByteDance released what it calls “a newly imagined” version of its the popular video sharing platform on the $3,500 Vision Pro, which is decidedly different from the straight Android port the company brought to Pico 4, a device from sister company Pico Interactive.

The […]

Owlchemy Labs, the Google-owned VR studio, announced it’s bringing the chart-topping VR games Job Simulator (2016) and its sequel Vacation Simulator (2019) to Apple Vision Pro.

The studio’s seminal ‘Simulator’ franchise has had its fair share of success over the years, with both garnering over a million downloads across all major VR headsets. As testament to its staying power, the studio’s successful job place parody Job Simulator regularly shows up in the top most popular VR game charts since its launch on the original HTC Vive in 2016, with both titles making for great beginner VR […]

Vision Pro Has Apps and Quest Has Games, What Can Samsung Bring to XR to Compete?

By |February 16, 2024|

Samsung has partnered with Google to make an XR headset, although the South Korean tech giant hasn’t tipped its hand on what to expect just yet. Despite its $3,500 sticker price, Vision Pro has shown that big and expensive is okay as long as you can engage diehard fans with compelling hardware and greater ecosystem integration. That’s a patently Apple recipe though that Samsung may not be able to easily replicate. The question is: what can Samsung bring to the table that Apple and Meta can’t? The answer may be Google, but only if it can commit.

The Meta-Apple Binary in […]

Zuckerberg: Quest 3 Beats Vision Pro in ‘vast majority’ of Cases in Mixed Reality

By |February 14, 2024|

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg got a chance to try out Apple Vision Pro, which although seven times more expensive than the company’s Quest 3 mixed reality headset, is arguably its biggest competitor right now—at least in terms of mental real estate it’s taking up. Here’s what the Meta chief himself thought about Apple’s first XR headset.

In a video released on Instagram, Zuckerberg explains his recent experience with the $3,500 Vision Pro. To him, it was already a forgone conclusion that $500 Quest 3 would be the better deal, but the Meta CEO goes on to […]

Every classroom is a busy place, but STEM-specific classrooms are built on collaboration, communication, and hands-on inquiry. Things are bound to be extra noisy and energetic. This isn’t a bad thing–it’s “the sound of learning,” as a coworker of mine once put it! However, it does mean that STEM classrooms require skilled management to keep […]
