Pimax Has Two New Headsets on the Way While Older Promises Remain Unfulfilled

By |April 16, 2024|

Pimax announced two new PC VR headsets today—both said to be launching this year—but it’s more than a year behind schedule on other products.

“Pimax has never been short on ambition, but its execution hasn’t always kept up.”

That’s a line from my article published on October 26th, 2021, in which Pimax announced three major products:

The Pimax Reality “12K” headset with a monstrous resolution estimated at 18.6MP (5,760 x 3,240) per-eye and a massive 240° diagonal field-of-view
A 60GHz wireless add-on for streaming PC VR
A console-like ‘Pimax VR Station’ for streaming PC VR content to its headsets

Pimax had […]

By |April 16, 2024|

During a prerecorded presentation today, Pimax introduced the Crystal Light and Crystal Super PC VR headsets.

Crystal Light might sound like a diet drink, but it’s actually a more affordable version of the company’s flagship Crystal headset, which Pimax says has been “highly successful.” The company says Crystal Light is a “streamlined iteration” of the original Crystal headset, and cuts some major features to reduce the weight and price of […]

This Vision Pro App Does What Netflix Wouldn’t, Bringing 4K Streaming & Dolby Atmos

By |April 12, 2024|

Despite its focus on casual content consumption, Netflix still hasn’t brought an app to Vision Pro. If you’re looking for a good replacement though, a new app called Supercut has you covered.

A number of streaming giants opted-out of including any sort of app for Vision Pro including Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify, which was a puzzling move since their iOS apps would have been supported by default. It’s ostensibly a snub at Apple, although the lack of these popular apps has left room for independent developers to fill in the gaps, like the paid app

Enterprise Social XR Platform ‘Glue’ at Risk as Developer Declares Bankruptcy

By |April 12, 2024|

Glue Collaboration, the Helsinki-based startup creating remote collaboration tools for XR, announced it has filed for bankruptcy, putting the future of its business-focused social platform Glue at risk.

CEO Jussi Havu announced the news on April 10th, stating that Glue Collaboration declared bankruptcy on April 8th, and that the Helsinki, Finland-based company would soon be liquidating its assets—undoubtedly the most important of which is the social XR platform Glue itself, which supports Quest and SteamVR headsets.

Havu says in an announcement (also seen below) that in the next two weeks, the company will be “exploring all options […]

By |April 12, 2024|

Varjo announced it’s now supporting Quest 3 and Quest Pro for its cloud XR streaming platform ‘Reality Cloud’, which lets professionals stream and share immersive 3D content rendered on cloud-based GPUs.

The Finland-based creator of high-end XR headsets is known for its pricey, but high-quality mixed reality headsets, which are primarily used in the enterprise space for designers and engineers, but also for things such as detailed simulation and training.

You don’t need to plonk down the $3,990 for the company’s base model Varjo XR-4 headset though to use its subscription-based Varjo Reality Cloud service, which offloads […]

If you’re an eighth grader who wants to take algebra, can you even take the class?

The answer to that question, it turns out, depends a lot on two things: how your school identifies students for advanced math, and where you live.

According to a new nationally representative survey released Tuesday, 65% of U.S. principals said their elementary or middle school offered algebra in eighth grade, but only to certain students. Meanwhile, just 20% of principals said their school offered the […]

By |April 10, 2024|

If you’ve been wondering when you could finally gamify your vacuuming routine after seeing one of the more viral AR videos on social mendia recently, Dyson has you covered, because it’s actually making the thing for iPhone and one of its patently pricey stick vacuums.

Shopify’s Principal XR Engineer Daniel Beauchamp is no stranger to prototyping weird and wild AR/VR input schemes, although you might be more familiar with his latest take on AR cleaning which made the rounds on social media earlier this year, which uses a Quest Pro with a Touch controller attached to […]

Meta is Testing ‘Instant Replay’ Feature in ‘Horizon Worlds’ to Make Social VR More Viral

By |April 9, 2024|

Meta announced it’s bringing an ‘Instant Replay’ feature to Horizon Worlds, which will let world creators and visitors capture their antics without having to hit ‘record’ on their cameras.

The feature, which is currently in early access on Horizon Worlds v157, can be enabled by individual world creators, letting anyone in that specific social VR room automatically capture video and share via the media gallery. Meta says it’s specifically built to keep users from disrupting the moment by pausing to open the camera and manually pressing record.

Before entering a world, users will be able to see whether […]

In update v64, Meta says we’re getting higher-fidelity passthrough on Quest 3, which is said to improve color, exposure, contrast, and dynamic range. If you were a part of the public test channel (PTC), you might have noticed some marked improvements already.

“Taken together, these improvements should make it easier to, for instance, see fine details (i.e. phone notifications and other small text) without […]

By |April 8, 2024|

Only released on PC on March 21st, Horizon Forbidden West again follows series protagonist Aloy as she braves a majestic but dangerous new frontier that’s filled to the brim with bigger and more awe-inspiring machines.

Netflix is Selling the ‘3 Body Problem’ Headset, But Sadly It’s Just a Prop

By |April 5, 2024|

Netflix is selling the headset featured in its latest TV series 3 Body Problem, which heavily features characters accessing a shared virtual reality. Unfortunately, it’s just a prop—but it’s actually pretty cool as far as nonfunctional collectibles go.

Sold direct from Netflix for $110, it’s pretty clear from the price alone that the 3 Body Problem headset is just a high quality model, although it’s actually a little bit more than just a piece of plastic you can wear on your head.

The model’s polycarbonate is finished in silver chrome, letting you actually wear it and see the […]

Vision Pro is Hands-down the Best Movie Experience You Can Have on a Plane

By |April 5, 2024|

After an eight hour flight, I can say that Apple has largely nailed the Vision Pro use-case of movie watching on a plane. But a few key improvements stand to make it more widely appealing.

Nobody looks forward to an eight hour flight. Whether it’s sleeping or reading or working, people want a way to pass the time and distract themselves from the noisy cabin, turbulence, and the general feeling of being packed into a metal tube like sardines.

The seat-back screen—with its selection of movies and TV shows—offers minor refuge from this chaotic environment.

I’m someone who really appreciates ‘cinematic […]

‘Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice’ Studio Has No Plans to Support VR for Upcoming Sequel

By |April 5, 2024|

Ninja Theory, the studio behind award-winning VR-supported game Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (2017), says there are currently no plans to bring its upcoming sequel to VR.

Unlike the first game, which brought PC VR support in a free update in 2018, it doesn’t appear we should hold out hope for a similar release for the upcoming sequel Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.

According to a PCGamesN interview with Ninja Theory, studio head Dom Matthews was asked directly if such a VR update was in the cards, which was met with an unambiguous “no.”

Coming to PC and Xbox consoles on May 21st, Senua’s […]
