This is What a Vision Pro Competitor From Meta Could Look Like

By |February 5, 2024|

With Apple Vision Pro out in the wild, it’s likely that Meta’s Quest Pro line will evolve to become more of a direct competitor. And we’ve actually got an idea of what an even higher-end Quest Pro 2 could potentially look like.

Apple’s Bar

With Vision Pro, Apple was clearly not aiming to make an affordable headset. Their strategy was to create the minimum viable quality bar for what they wanted the mixed reality experience to look and feel like. After packing in all the tech & features they thought was necessary, Vision Pro landed at $3,500.

That makes it only […]

Existing VR Games Would Look Great on Vision Pro, But Without Controllers Most Are Stuck

By |February 3, 2024|

Apple doesn’t call Vision Pro a mixed reality headset, or a virtual reality headset for that matter. To Apple, it’s all spatial computing, which is fine—if not a little too vague. Since it doesn’t support dedicated controllers like all VR headsets out there though, it’s leaving many developers essentially stuck and unable to port many of the most popular immersive games to Vision Pro.

Vision Pro launches today, emerging as an impressive addition to the world of XR headsets. It features robust hardware, which on paper seems to position it as an ideal platform for VR gaming. It has […]

VR MMO ‘Zenith’ to Offer Free-to-Play Mode & Premium Currency with ‘Nexus’ Rebrand

By |February 2, 2024|

In an effort to boost engagement, Ramen VR, developers behind VR-exclusive MMORPG Zenith: The Last City (2022), announced the game will soon feature a free-to-play mode and premium in-game currency as it rebrands to Zenith: Nexus.

Nexus is set to host access to content from both The Last City as well as a newly announced free-to-play section, called Infinite Realms. This departs from the usual free-to-play retrofitting we’ve seen in other MMORPGs, such as OrbusVRwhich lets users play up to a certain level before introducing a paywall.

For users jumping into Zenith: Nexus for the first time, content from the […]

Quest 3 Pushed Meta Reality Labs to Record Revenue in Q4, But Also Record Costs

By |February 2, 2024|

Meta today announced its fourth quarter earnings for 2023, revealing how Reality Labs has fared during the holiday season. It’s been a banner quarter for Meta’s XR division, with Reality Labs posting record revenue numbers, but also record costs.

During its Q4 earnings call, Meta revealed its XR division had crossed over $1 billion in revenue for the first time, but also had its biggest quarter in terms of costs at $5.72 billion, resulting in a quarterly loss of $4.65 billion. This beats the division’s revenue record of $877 million in Q4 2022, and handily beats it’s second largest […]

Vision Pro Preview: Early Thoughts on My Time Inside Apple’s First Headset

By |February 2, 2024|

Over the last three weeks I’ve had the chance to spend significant time in Apple Vision Pro. While my full review is still marinating, I want to share some early thoughts I’ve had while using the headset and what it means overall for the XR industry.

It has to be said that anyone who doesn’t recognize how consequential the launch of Vision Pro is fundamentally doesn’t understand the XR industry. This is the biggest thing to happen since Facebook bought Oculus in 2014.

It’s not just Vision Pro itself, it’s Apple. Everything about the device suggests the company does not consider […]

Unity Releases 1.0 Tools for Vision Pro App Development

By |February 1, 2024|

Unity has officially launched 1.0 support for visionOS, making its now Vision Pro-compatible game engine available to all Unity Pro, Enterprise, and Industry subscribers.

Unity announced in recent a blog post that support for visionOS is now out of beta, which lets paid users create three main types of XR experiences: mixed reality apps, fully-immersive virtual reality apps, and 2D windowed content that is resizable and repositionable by the user.

Beta users included Light Brick Studio, which ported LEGO Builder’s Journey to Vision Pro, and TRIPP, the studio behind the titular meditation app. Both TRIPP and Lego Builder’s Journey are available on […]

Climate change is an increasingly important subject in school curriculums. Today’s students will almost certainly inherit a climate-affected world and will need to understand the mechanisms of global warming if they are to grow into climate-conscious, civic-minded members of society.

However, many students are dissuaded from pursuing environmental science due to mundane textbooks and complex diagrams. This is a serious issue, […]

By |January 31, 2024|

Shiftall, the Japan-based VR hardware creator, is no longer owned by Panasonic, as the company has been effectively sold off to the Tokyo-based company CREEK & RIVER.

As first noted by tech analyst and YouTuber Brad Lynch, Panasonic today announced it has transferred all shares of Shiftall to the Tokyo-based company CREEK & RIVER Co., Ltd., which specializes in outsourcing, consulting, content management and distribution services.

First Filed in 2017, Vision Pro EyeSight Patent Envisioned Anime Eyes & Furry Avatars

By |January 31, 2024|

Apple was recently granted a patent for ‘EyeSight’, the external display on Vision Pro which shows the wearer’s eyes. The patent was filed way back in 2017 and envisioned the feature being used to show stylized eyes like those of anime and furry characters.

EyeSight is perhaps the most unique bit of hardware on Vision Pro. Apple has been sitting on the idea for the better part of six years, having first filed a provisional application for the idea in June of 2017. After filing the full application a year later, Apple was just granted the […]

Report: Quest to Natively Support Spatial Videos Originally Meant for Vision Pro

By |January 29, 2024|

One of the big features being touted by Apple is Vision Pro’s ability to play back spatial video captured on iPhone 15. According to data recently mined in the Meta app, Quest is reportedly set to natively support the specific video codec.

The information was obtained by X (formerly Twitter) user M1Astra, who notes a number of strings found within a beta version of Meta’s app for iOS. The strings that most likely refer to native support for the MV-HVEC codec include:

“Immerse yourself in your favourite memories by uploading videos on the Meta Quest app.”
“Enable […]
